Chapter 24: Amaira (10-08-2100)
"Good morning, Doctor," Gordon said as he and Harry entered Amaira's office.
"Good morning, Captain Conner, Captain Gordon," Amaira replied with a smile. "How may I assist you today?"
Amaira was a lovely middle-aged woman with bright red hair. She was all business, with a tight bun on top of her head and a beige shipsuit buttoned all the way up to her neck. She wore narrow rectangular spectacles that would sometimes hang low and allow for her piercing hazel eyes to look deep inside her patients' souls. Although she was constantly kept busy throughout the long journey, she felt the Albatross 5 crew didn't visit her nearly as much as they should. Instead, they found alternative outlets for their psychological issues. Most of her patients were men, whom she believed were just there to have someone listen to them.
"Well, I think Harry needs to speak with you," Gordon said awkwardly.
Harry uncomfortably scanned the room, but couldn't look Amaira in the eyes.
"Mister Conner?" Amaira said with her soothing voice, "Would you like to have a session with me?"
"Not sure, Doc," Harry replied as he nervously scratched the top of his head. "I mean, I'm not really one to talk about my feelings and whatnot."
"That's fine, Mister Conner," Amaira said politely. "I'm not here to force anyone to talk. I am, however, concerned by the fact that after a year-plus journey through space, the man with the greatest weight upon his shoulders hasn't seen me once. I'm beginning to think you don't like me, Mister Conner."
Harry finally looked Dr. Amaira in the eye, and was caught off guard by the doctor's confidence and beauty.
"Oh, no," he laughed nervously, "of course not, Doc."
"Well, if that's not the case," Amaira smiled, "then my services certainly aren't being fully utilized, are they, Mister Conner?"
"I, uh," Harry stammered, "I mean, I didn't mean to not, umâ¦"
"Harry, can you just try a session?" Gordon asked as he put his hand on his former leader's back. "Just a short one?"
"Sure," Harry said reluctantly, "I guess I can give it a try."
"Excellent!" Amaira replied. "Well, that will certainly brighten up my day."
"I'm gonna let you two be," Gordon said as he turned for the door. "Harry, I'll be right outside, okay?"
"No worries, Gordon," Harry said as Gordon vanished behind the automatic door, "you don't have to wait for me, go and do your thing."
"Have a seat, Mister Conner," Amaira invited as she extended her hand toward a very comfortable-looking recliner across from her desk.
Harry looked at the puffy seat hesitantly for a moment, and then finally sat down.
"Okay," he sighed, "so how does this work?"
